What the Jews Experienced at the Camp
When the camp became operational on December 8, 1941, the first deportation was that day. In the first deportation, the victims were the residents nearby the Wartheland District. They arrived by trucks and the trucks were unloaded one at a time. The Jews had to wait out in the courtyard, where most of the SS were wearing white coats to give the impression that they were physicians. The Jews were told that they would be sent of to Germany and put in a concentration camp there, but first they all needed to shower and get there clothes disinfected. Then they were lead to a back room of the manor house where they undressed and handed everything over to a Polish civilian. After that, they were lead down the ramp into a truck. The truck was for the first 50-70 people that could fit in it. After it was filled, it was closed and sealed. A tube attached to the exhaust pipe let out gas into the truck. The back of the truck should be filled of dead bodies after the gassing, so the pipe was detached and the truck went to the forest camp's mass graves. Once they emptied the truck and anyone was still alive, they were shot.
January 16, 1942 was when the Lodz ghetto was deported. They first went by train, then truck to the camp. They went through the same killing process as the first deportation. With this deportation, they selected around 50 people to work at the forest camp. Then they were able to annihilate other victims of Hitler like the blacks and Gypsies. When they finally slowed down on victims to annihilate, they finally sent all the Jewish workers through the killing process (Chelmo United).
